We all know that the internet has transformed the way we live, and one industry which has been profoundly affected by new technology is the travel industry. Where once a trip overseas would involve a visit to the travel agent, now we can go just about anywhere we want from the comfort of our home, armed with nothing more than a laptop or smartphone – as well as, of course, a credit or debit card.
So, we thought we would have a look around to see what’s new and interesting when it comes to travel related websites. Here are a few of our favourites:
Tingo.com: For years people have been confronted with the same dilemna when trying to organise a holiday. Should you book it now or wait a while to see if the price drops? Well, now you can have the best of both worlds with Tingo. If you book a hotel room now and the price subsequently drops, the site will cancel your previous reservation and rebook you in at the lower rate. Genius!
Getgoing.com: Did you know that up to twenty per cent of seats on flights in the US are unsold? Getgoing exploits this statistic by selling these seats at discounts of close to fifty per cent. The only downside is that you need to be very flexible in terms of destinations and flight timings, but if you are able to do this there are fantastic savings to be had. You need to book two possible destinations but actually only find out which one you are flying to after you have paid, a bit like those “mystery” discount package holidays that were once so popular. The site only offers flights in the US at present, but is shortly to enter the European market.
Travelope.com: This clever site offers a convenient way to access the best of the travel deals out there. You may be registered with discount sites like Groupon or Secretescapes but sometimes the flood of emails can be a bit disconcerting, to say the least. Travelope groups all these offers together and sends you one notice, including hotels, flights ands much more, all in one easy to search place.
