Finding a Nanny in the UK

by admin on March 13, 2013

Finding a nanny in the UK is now easier than it’s ever been. Thanks to the internet you can have a list of nannies in your local area within a matter of minutes. Because the internet provides you with more than one way to find a nanny online, it’s very useful to know the pros and cons of each option so you can decide which is best for you. Once you’ve decided on how you’re going to find a nanny, you’ll then want to narrow down your list so you can choose the best candidate possible. I cover how to choose the right person at the end of that article. First, though, let’s look at the main ways of finding a nanny online.

Main Ways to Find a Nanny Online

Below are three of the main ways you can search for nannies online –

1. Using Classified Ads – This is often the first thing people think of when they start looking for a nanny. There are many sites out there that have classified ads for nannies such as Gumtree and Craigslist. Whilst you shouldn’t have much trouble finding a nanny in this way, it does have its drawbacks. The main one being that you’re typically not given a great deal of information about the nanny from their ad so it will mean setting up a lot of calls and interviews until you find the right person.

2. Using a Nanny Agency – There are no shortage of nanny agencies online that cater to the UK so you’ll certainly have no problem finding someone in your local area. However there is a very big drawback to using nanny agencies and that’s the fees they charge. Typically agencies will charge you 10-15% of the nanny’s salary which means you paying a significant amount of extra money for using their service. You’re also required to enter a contract with the agency which means they act as your agent. Many people find this way of doing things either too restrictive or too expensive. The plus point of using an agency is that if you go with a reputable one then you’ll have a lot of the leg work done for you because the agency will work to get you the best match possible. That said, you can still end up doing a significant amount of work yourself as only you can decide on who is right for you.

3. Using an Online Nanny Search Service – An alternative to using an agency or classified ads is to use a nanny search service. By paying a small fee you’re able to search for nannies in your local area by entering your postcode or town name. You’ll then be given a list of nannies in your area and you’ll be able to see details about their experience, age, rates etc. These types of search services are much cheaper than using an agency so many people now favour them.

Choosing the Right Person

Of course finding a nanny isn’t just about how you find them but about whether or not they’re a good match for you and your family. As you meet different nannies you’ll want to have a good list of questions to ask so you can find out if they’re right for you. Below are some of the best questions to ask potential nannies –

1. What is Your Experience?

2. When Are You Available to Work?

3. Are You Able to Drive?

4. Do You Have Any Holidays Planned?

5. What is Your Childcare Style?
